Girlhood Dreams

It’s Tamara’s big day but the white dress doesn’t really suit her. She is only 14-years-old and the groom waiting for her is only two years older. She is getting ready to marry her cousin Ahmad from the Beat-Lahya refugee camp in Gaza Strip.

The Marriage of Ahmad and Tamara raised the public opinion against the child marriage in Palestine. Palestinian Human Rights NGOs have criticized the marriage and referred to the UNICEF Child Rights definition of early marriage “as a formal marriage or informal union before age 18.” According to UNICEF, early marriage is a reality for both boys and girls, although girls are disproportionately the most affected.
